Stupid Lawsuits

Overlawyered: Jim Butler wins $105M verdict in Chrysler seat litigation

Somehow, some way, we MUST stop suing one another over every little thing. America has become a dangerously litigious society, and the number of frivolous lawsuits is only increasing.

It’s been suggested that taking an approach similar to what is done in the U.K. would work well – that is, if you sue some one, and you loose (i.e., the suit you brought forth was probably frivolous) then YOU are responsible for the defendant’s legal fees.

Contrast this with how the system is currently set up – you can hire a (for example) Personal Injury lawyer and not pay ANYTHING unless you win money in a judgment. If you loose – you don’t pay anything, which just encourages frivolous lawsuits. (I’m sure some of you have seen ads on TV for lawyers like this – it makes me sick sometimes!)

Anyway, this is just one person’s take on the situation. As always, read and make up your own mind.
