Spam Me Not

Spam is a problem for everyone, but it’s especially a problem for me – since I get all of the email for the entire StarKeith.net domain. Now, my spam filters are very good (thanks to Thunderbird), but before the filters kicked in I had to download nearly 300 emails – and that takes a while, even on a high-speed connection. A lot of the spam wasn’t even directed to me – it was sent to non-existent email addresses like “joe@starkeith.net” and so forth. A lot of it was also those fake administrative emails I talked about previously.

So, being the geek that I am, I decided to do something about it.

There is a special alias on my website called “catch-all,” which, as the name implies, catches all email not destined for an existing user. I simply re-directed this alias to my site’s “blackhole” account – which is directed at /dev/null. So now all those spams get dumped into nothingness – the “bit bucket,” as some people call it. Now I get only about 30 emails a day.

Not bad, eh?
