An End To ‘Everybody’s Press’?

TCS: Tech Central Station – An End To ‘Everybody’s Press’?

Some background before you click on the link: The FEC (federal elections committee) is thinking about expanding the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 (BCRA, a.k.a McCain-Feingold) to regulate political speech even more – and this has got some people really scared. The reason they are scared is because many bloggers would fall under the proposed legislation – basically, it would suddenly make it a lot harder to talk about or engage in politics on the Internet.

To quote FEC Commissioner Brad Smith:

[…] one of the problems I think with campaign finance law and regulation is that it adds complexity and makes it more difficult for citizens to participate in politics — it puts legal hurdles in their way.

Hopefully this will all turn out for the best, but you never know – governments love to regulate.
