{"id":747,"date":"2006-05-21T09:50:42","date_gmt":"2006-05-21T14:50:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.starkeith.net\/coredump\/?p=747"},"modified":"2009-06-11T18:25:19","modified_gmt":"2009-06-11T22:25:19","slug":"unusual-phrases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.starkeith.net\/coredump\/2006\/05\/21\/unusual-phrases\/","title":{"rendered":"Unusual Phrases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day I was talking to someone at work and I used the phrase &#8220;cuts the mustard,&#8221; which surprised the person I was talking with. This prompted me to think about some of the more unusual phrases that I use in everyday speech &#8211; unusual at least in the sense that most people in this region (New England) don&#8217;t use them.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the phrases I use have come from Amanda and my travels down under &#8211; such as &#8220;bloody hell&#8221; and &#8220;bugger me.&#8221; I also have been caught saying &#8220;flat battery&#8221; (for &#8220;dead battery&#8221;) and &#8220;brekkie&#8221; (or &#8220;brekky&#8221;) for &#8220;breakfast&#8221; (the latter usually being when I&#8217;m feeding the bunnies breakfast, as in &#8220;hey bunnies, time for some brekkie!&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Another phrase I&#8217;ve caught myself using is &#8220;well I&#8217;ll be bounced,&#8221; which has a peculiar origin in my youth &#8211; specifically, the show &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Disney%27s_Adventures_of_the_Gummi_Bears\">Gummi Bears<\/a>,&#8221; which I used to watch frequently as a kid.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any unusual phrases that you use, feel free to share them in the comments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Apparently, some of the common phrases I use are not actually that common here in New England.
