{"id":6190,"date":"2024-12-10T21:00:35","date_gmt":"2024-12-11T02:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.starkeith.net\/coredump\/?p=6190"},"modified":"2024-12-10T21:00:37","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T02:00:37","slug":"another-year-another-set-of-key-caps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.starkeith.net\/coredump\/2024\/12\/10\/another-year-another-set-of-key-caps\/","title":{"rendered":"Another year, another set of key caps"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It&#8217;s (almost) a new year, and during Black Friday I saw an ad for key caps and it&#8217;s been a little while since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starkeith.net\/coredump\/2022\/12\/10\/a-difference-in-key-caps\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5965\">I last changed out my key caps<\/a>, and the price was good, so I decided to get myself a new set, just to change things up. (Also, it was a good excuse to pull all the caps off and give my keyboard a bit of a deep-clean.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2qz6sky\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54195763502_620743158c_z.jpg\" alt=\"new keychron k8 keycaps\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This time I went with a set of key caps from Keychron, the maker of my keyboard, rather than a 3rd party set. Although I liked the keys I had before, I missed having my keyboard-specific alternate-function labels on some of the keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The set I went with is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keychron.com\/products\/double-shot-pbt-osa-full-set-keycap-set\">Double Shot PBT OSA Full set<\/a> (I didn&#8217;t need the full set, they didn&#8217;t have a tenkeyless specific set) in gray, with orange accent keys. (Sadly, the retro color scheme was out of stock.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These caps are slightly rounded, giving them a bit of a retro feel &#8211; which I was kind of leaning towards anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2qzb6mP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54196668491_c929f64049_c.jpg\" alt=\"keychron k8 seen from the side (with new key caps)\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The caps are double-shot, which I like because the labels won&#8217;t wear away (a problem I&#8217;ve had with other keyboards in the past), though it does mean the backlight doesn&#8217;t come through the labels &#8211; but that&#8217;s something I can live with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2qz6tEN\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54195767982_4407862909_c.jpg\" alt=\"keychron k8 keyboard with new caps - backlights on\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It still looks cool with the backlight on, though, and the typing feel is good &#8211; I&#8217;m still able to type at my usual speed. The key sound is also pretty much the same as before &#8211; I don&#8217;t notice much of a difference, but that&#8217;s OK because I was happy with how my keyboard sounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All in all I&#8217;m quite happy with my new set of key caps. It&#8217;ll probably take me a few days to pick a new backlight color (I&#8217;m not sure what will go best yet), but that&#8217;s part of the fun. Maybe swapping out my key caps will become a new yearly tradition?
