As I was setting out, I noticed a path heading in a direction I&#8217;d never seen before, and I decided to take it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"deer print by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834841002\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7279\/7834841002_50d0d4ff24.jpg\" alt=\"deer print\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Right away I was rewarded with seeing some deer prints in the sand beside the river, which is not very unusual because deer are very common in New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"water's edge by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834841718\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7109\/7834841718_94705e71c9.jpg\" alt=\"water's edge\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still, it was very nice beside the water&#8217;s edge, with the sound of the river flowing and the crickets chirping in the early Summer evening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"the river is ... low by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834842528\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8292\/7834842528_4c5c94043f.jpg\" alt=\"the river is ... low\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The river was rather low though, because it&#8217;s been such a dry summer, which meant I could get to some places I normally wouldn&#8217;t be able to.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"a way across by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834843308\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8283\/7834843308_18e92bf8d3.jpg\" alt=\"a way across\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I eventually found a way across a little side stream, which led me further upstream&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"a steep slope by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834844098\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7246\/7834844098_7bdae4e58b.jpg\" alt=\"a steep slope\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and then I found the path took a sharp turn up a steep slope, which &#8211; strangely enough! &#8211; had a rope tied off to help you climb up it. Very strange, considering you normally can&#8217;t get over here&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"looking down the slope by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834844598\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8283\/7834844598_de22854ea8.jpg\" alt=\"looking down the slope\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once I was up, the path wound on a bit further, which led me to a bit of a&#8230; smelly&#8230; surprise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"the bog of eternal stench by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834845342\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8282\/7834845342_79a4685f9b.jpg\" alt=\"the bog of eternal stench\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although all it had in common was the bad smell, I&#8217;m still calling this place the &#8220;bog of eternal stench.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>By this point, things were starting to feel a little weird &#8211; this was a strange new place, and it&#8217;d gone very quiet &#8211; you couldn&#8217;t hear the sounds of cars on the road where I&#8217;d parked, and the air had taken on that strange still feeling that you get in the deep countryside in late summer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"tiny fairy forest on a log in the bog by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834846460\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8435\/7834846460_d0e34cf6d9.jpg\" alt=\"tiny fairy forest on a log in the bog\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking a bit closer, I saw that the log that was lying in the bog (heh) had a lot of growth on it, which looked really neat, so I (very carefully) climbed out there to take a closer look. I honestly wouldn&#8217;t have been surprised to see faeries or smurfs or something like that crawling around.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"someone marked out a path by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834847190\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7275\/7834847190_11a8259e7e.jpg\" alt=\"someone marked out a path\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still, despite all of this, the path was clearly marked, although I don&#8217;t know who had done this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"everything is overgrown with green by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834848408\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8291\/7834848408_fff9d32dea.jpg\" alt=\"everything is overgrown with green\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I moved further, you could just see that everything was absolutely covered with green, like an overgrown ruin of some sort&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"overgrown structure by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834847876\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8302\/7834847876_7a40994d43.jpg\" alt=\"overgrown structure\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eventually I stumbled across this strange structure, although I think you can guess what it is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"secret entrance by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834848960\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7124\/7834848960_c440402c1e.jpg\" alt=\"secret entrance\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The trail briefly exited onto a road at this point, and I turned around and almost couldn&#8217;t find the path I&#8217;d just come out of!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"another hidden entrance by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834849696\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8446\/7834849696_da2bd09e61.jpg\" alt=\"another hidden entrance\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It really was a very well hidden entrance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"drain pool by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834850448\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8304\/7834850448_72b888a9b0.jpg\" alt=\"drain pool\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Heading back (somewhat) the way I came, I found myself next to this surprisingly pleasant pool (aside from the inevitable bugs).<\/p>\n<p>At this point I had to retrace my steps somewhat, and returned to the path beside the river.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"lone bench by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834851526\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8295\/7834851526_cfc0e9f0a0.jpg\" alt=\"lone bench\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s when I stumbled across this &#8211; a lone bench, sitting beside the river, on a section of riverbank that normally would be submerged. Although I was actually quite close to them, I did not have a zoom lens on (it&#8217;s too dark for my zoom lenses) so I had to crop a bit to get these pictures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"little bridge and on to the other side by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834856826\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7248\/7834856826_e1df515f0f.jpg\" alt=\"little bridge and on to the other side\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ravine eventually narrowed and another, smaller bridge crossed it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"the path back to civilization by Keithius, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/keithius\/7834857676\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7260\/7834857676_42b23b165b.jpg\" alt=\"the path back to civilization\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This brought me out briefly to a path where the grass had been recently mowed.
