{"id":3971,"date":"2012-07-18T08:21:49","date_gmt":"2012-07-18T12:21:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.starkeith.net\/coredump\/?p=3971"},"modified":"2012-07-18T16:47:20","modified_gmt":"2012-07-18T20:47:20","slug":"still-blogging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.starkeith.net\/coredump\/2012\/07\/18\/still-blogging\/","title":{"rendered":"Still Blogging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s a reason I don\u2019t use services like Tumblr (or LiveJournal, or Blogger, or any of a dozen other similar \u201cfree\u201d services) and instead still post things here on my own blog \u2013 and that is: <strong>I own this blog, but I don\u2019t own Tumblr*.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, this may not \u2013 scratch that, this <strong><em>will not<\/em><\/strong> apply to everyone, but for me, my words are my \u201cproduct,\u201d so to speak. They are the thing I spend time creating, and they are <em>important<\/em> to me \u2013 important enough that I would not want them to be lost.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever I\u2019m trying to decide whether to use some new web-based service (at least, the \u201cfree\u201d ones), I ask myself, \u201cif this service disappeared tomorrow, would it be a huge loss for me?\u201d If the answer is \u201cyes,\u201d then I either won\u2019t use the service, or I will only post low-importance things there (or I\u2019ll duplicate the content elsewhere).<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, there are some \u201cfree\u201d services that I trust sufficiently to get over the \u201cwhat if it disappeared\u201d hurdle \u2013 things like Gmail, to name one example. (Though that doesn\u2019t stop me from keeping a local, cached backup copy, just in case!)<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, these are just some of my thoughts \u2013 and of course everyone else\u2019s criteria will differ from mine. But it\u2019s worth thinking about before you commit to creating a lot of content with whatever the next \u201ccool\u201d new web service is!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: smaller;\">* This goes for any paid service, really. If I pay for it, I generally expect not to be left in the cold.
